A hill loop on private farmland above Gisborne, with a lambing closure on the check date and a damaged access road requiring care.
Check the season and approach
Te Kuri is a private-farm outing rather than an unrestricted city park. Its annual lambing closure includes the beginning of October, so use this profile for later planning until DOC confirms access. The signed approach leads to the end of Shelley Road. DOC warns about deep potholes and a gravel final section, including the possibility of two-wheel-drive vehicles becoming stuck. Check whether the approach suits your vehicle before committing to the narrow end of the journey.
Allow a hill-walking afternoon
The loop begins across flatter farmland before climbing steadily towards Town Hill lookout. The activity panel allows three hours, while the description gives a range of two to three; use the longer allowance when planning with less experienced walkers. This is a hill walk with a mixed official grade, not a flat exercise circuit. Carry drinking water and leave room for breaks. Views across the Poverty Bay flats depend on conditions, so a clear panorama should not be the only reason to go.
Keep farm access workable
Follow the defined route through farmland and patches of forest, leaving gates as you find them. Give stock plenty of space; DOC specifically warns that bulls may be encountered. Dogs, horses and mountain bikes are not allowed. Choose the direction and turnaround plan together before the group separates. Recheck the closure notice and weather before leaving Gisborne, and do not interpret an empty alerts panel as overriding the seasonal restriction printed on the route page.
Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
