The full Rocky Mountain circuit above Diamond Lake near Wanaka, including steeper upper-track terrain.
Choose the whole mountain circuit
Rocky Mountain continues above Diamond Lake to views over Lake Wanaka and the surrounding ranges. This record covers the complete circuit from the car park, not just the lower lake or its viewpoint. Keep those destinations separate when discussing the day. Someone expecting a gentle lakeside visit may reasonably prefer a different outing from a party aiming for the upper mountain.
Expect more than a smooth path
DOC describes slippery, steep ground, light scrambling on the western side and exposed drops on the east. Its mixed walking grade is retained conservatively as intermediate, but the terrain notes are essential to deciding suitability. Think about how the least confident walker will manage the descent as well as the climb, especially if rain has changed the footing since an earlier visit.
Check the season and the location
Winter ice can make even the lower Diamond Lake approach unsuitable, and the access road may be icy. Confirm the Wanaka location when planning: another Diamond Lake lies near Glenorchy and is not the start of this walk. Put the correct road and destination into your intentions so a place-name match does not send a driver or collecting friend to the wrong valley.
Make a smaller day a valid choice
Allow the circuit to occupy the main part of the day's walking rather than squeezing it between fixed activities. Review weather, daylight and the group's confidence before continuing higher. An agreed early turnaround is easier to make when it has been discussed from the beginning. Take breaks before fatigue affects balance, and avoid letting a hoped-for panorama dictate decisions on uncomfortable terrain.
