A mining-tunnel out-and-back above Karangahake Gorge; the Crown Tramway closure means the older full-loop description must not be followed.
Plan an out-and-back, not a loop
The current activity panel gives a same-way return, while older descriptive text still outlines a circuit using Crown Tramway Track. The separate DOC alert closes that tramway because of landslips and directs walkers back through the Windows tunnel. Use that restriction when planning. Do not continue onto the closed return simply because a map, older account or the page's narrative shows a loop. Recheck the alert close to your visit.
Make the tunnels the destination
From Karangahake Reserve car park, the described approach crosses the Ohinemuri and Lower Waitawheta Gorge bridges before climbing stairs past Talisman battery remains. It then follows the old rail alignment into the mining tunnels. Carry a torch and keep everyone together before entering. The openings overlook the gorge, but looking out does not require leaving the formed route. Allow additional stopping time for the historic remains rather than rushing the return.
Check neighbouring closures separately
The October rock-scaling notice names the Rail Tunnel, Tunnel Loop Walk and Gorge Historic Walkway, not a blanket closure of every Karangahake attraction. It also warns that road closures can affect access. Read the current notices for each intended stop and respect barriers at the rail tunnel. Heavy-rain restrictions on the lower Crown Track are another separate consideration. Keep this outing self-contained instead of assuming a continuation to Dickey Flat remains available.
Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
