Aim for the lodge, not another hut

Use DOC's directions through Apiti, Table Flat Road and Petersons Road to the farmland car park at the road end. The day outing described here stops at Alice Nash Memorial Heritage Lodge and returns by the approach track. Its distance and half-hour estimate are one way. Keep a separate allowance for the return climb and stops, and tell companions the destination before setting off so that the longer Oroua Valley routes are not mistaken for the same walk.

Follow the former logging route

The track descends towards the forest-park boundary and crosses Umutoi Creek on an arched bridge above a narrow gorge. It then continues through beech forest to the lodge, with an outlook up the Oroua River. Take time at secure places to enjoy the forest rather than crowding the bridge for photographs. DOC's mixed easy-to-intermediate grade should remain part of the decision for new walkers; the short time alone does not describe every person's effort.

Decide on extras before descending

A separate branch before the lodge drops to river flats. That addition needs extra time and a fresh assessment of conditions; reaching the lodge does not commit the group to going beside the river. Iron Gate Hut and Tunupo are substantially longer trips, not casual extensions. Carry clothing, food, water and emergency essentials. Recheck notices before departure, and arrange any overnight stay separately rather than assuming the lodge has space because the approach is short.

Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
