Valley camping near the meeting of Whangaiterenga Stream and the Kauaeranga River.
Choose a confluence-side valley base
Whangaiterenga is around five kilometres beyond the Kauaeranga Visitor Centre, near the stream's meeting with the main river. It provides a different stopping point from the road-end camps farther up-valley. Arrive with the valley layout saved so you can recognise the turnoff and compare open camping areas. Do not assume that a shared valley booking allocates your party to this particular site.
Look past the nearest river edge
Decide on a pitch by checking available space, ground conditions and the route to the toilet rather than choosing only for water views. Flush toilets are listed, but the drinking-water source is still a stream, so bring water or treatment equipment. Keep cooking gear self-contained and leave room for others moving through camp. Avoid expanding the pitch into river margins or vegetation around it.
Do not confuse the camp with its namesake track
DOC's permanent-closure list includes Whangaiterenga Track. The existence of this campground does not reopen that route or validate an old map connection. Choose an outing from current walking information after checking weather and access notices. Keep enough flexibility to use another open campground in the valley, and finish the stay with all rubbish and recycling packed for removal rather than relying on collection onsite.
Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
