Choose a Pureora forest base
Ngaherenga sits near the Pureora Base approach, with forest and a stream shaping the setting. It is a useful choice for spending time among the trees without moving camp after every outing. Follow the Barryville and Maraeroa road directions from State Highway 30 and check the gravel approach before bringing a large vehicle. Nearby DOC buildings do not imply a staffed campground reception.
Keep plans proportionate to the small camp
The published campsite is relatively small, so book the correct party and avoid assuming that a large combined tent-and-gazebo footprint will be easy to accommodate. Set up within the available camping space and leave access clear. A picnic table is listed, but individual pitches are not promised their own furniture. Carry a meal setup that works even if the shared table is being used.
Check the outing, not just the overnight
DOC mentions the Totara Track and Forest Tower among local activities. Verify their current access before making either the reason for a long detour. Treat tap water, bring cooking equipment and leave dogs at home. A forest night can be worthwhile with one modest walk, so keep time available for changing conditions rather than committing the entire stay to a tightly scheduled set of activities.
