Leave SH8 with a considered plan

The campsite is reached along Old Faithful Road from SH8, not at the main-road summit stop. Confirm that you have the correct destination and that the vehicle is suitable before turning off. A short distance on a map can still require careful driving. Plan to arrive early enough to assess the approach and camping area, with another overnight option available if conditions or the size of your vehicle make continuing inappropriate.

Camp beside history, not on it

The reserve contains the remains of the Lindis Pass Hotel beside the river. Treat the historic structures as features to appreciate from an appropriate distance, not furniture or shelter for camp. Select a pitch first and then explore without carrying all your overnight equipment around the remains. For children, explaining what should stay untouched before arrival can make the visit both more interesting and easier to supervise while the group settles in.

Prepare for an unreserved night

DOC lists free, first-come camping. Arrive with a complete sleeping system and enough food and drinking water to avoid depending on immediate replenishment. Keep the cooking setup compact and separate from the bedding. Because no reservation holds a place, maintain the option to move on rather than crowding an unsuitable space. Before leaving, inspect the area carefully and pack every small item, especially where equipment was set down while you looked around.

Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
