Make Herbert the correct turn-off
Glencoe is reached from Herbert via local streets and Glencoe Road, with a gravel approach. It is a forest-and-river camping choice rather than a beachfront Moeraki holiday park. Follow DOC's written directions to the actual campground, then take time to check the site allocation or selection process before unloading. Avoid using a similarly named commercial accommodation listing as the destination.
Respect the neighbouring nohoanga
The signposted Waianakarua Nohoanga beside the campground has a separate purpose and access arrangement. DOC describes seasonal use by authorised Ngai Tahu whanui; it is not spare public camping space when the DOC area is busy. Keep your tent, vehicle and activities within the area assigned for your stay, and use the signs on the ground to understand that distinction.
Prepare for a simple booked stay
The verified camping facilities are non-powered sites, non-flush toilets and untreated tap water. Bring cooking equipment and boil drinking water as directed. Book before travelling and retain the confirmation, because a campsite listing is not proof of spare capacity. Dogs must be leashed. For a short outing, choose current track information and assess the river separately rather than treating nearby access as an assurance of suitable swimming conditions.
Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
