Fletcher Bay is a road-end camping choice. The approach deserves as much attention as the beach or walking plans.
Make the road decision first
The route continues beyond Port Jackson and crosses a ford. DOC recommends a reliable, well-maintained 4WD for Port Jackson Road; narrow sections can require reversing, especially with a trailer.
Before booking, discuss the route with everyone sharing the driving. Check whether your vehicle provider permits it and whether you can turn around or change plans without pressure to continue. Leave time for a slow approach rather than calculating the journey from distance alone.
Reserve people, then choose a pitch
Bookings are required, but they do not allocate a particular patch of ground. The checked adult non-powered rate is NZ$18 per night. Read the official listing and save the confirmation before setting off.
Choose sleeping equipment that can be arranged within the space available to your group. Avoid promising companions a particular view or neighbouring pitch based on a photograph. Agree on a meeting point and booking name if travelling in separate vehicles.
Prepare for a basic coastal stay
Cold showers, non-flush toilets and untreated tap water are listed. Boil the water before use and carry enough ready-to-drink water for arrival. Bring the cookware, lighting and food storage you need; this is not a serviced kitchen booking.
Plan meals that create little waste and keep a sealed container for scraps. Check the campground appliance rules while packing. Do not take a prohibited item on the assumption that a secluded setting makes its use acceptable.
Keep walking and exit options realistic
DOC's page warns of a partial Coromandel Walkway closure. The road does not continue to Stony Bay, so neither a walking plan nor a drive should rely on a through connection.
After rain, reconsider the ford before both entering and leaving. Keep enough flexibility in the following day's commitments to choose an authorised alternative stay when conditions are unsuitable. Review weather through our conditions page, and compare Port Jackson as a separate option, not a guaranteed backup vacancy.

Common questions
Can I drive from Fletcher Bay through to Stony Bay?
No. Fletcher Bay is at a no-exit road end. Do not treat the walking connection as a vehicle route.
Does a Fletcher Bay booking guarantee road access?
No. Check the narrow-road advice and the ford separately, especially after rain. A reservation is not a road-condition assessment.
Are the showers hot?
DOC lists cold showers. Power and hot showers should not be assumed.
