Safety & navigation buying advice
Before you buy
Know its limitations
Navigation, communication and emergency alerting are different functions. A device does not replace route planning or the skills to use it.
From first use to the next trip
Use, care & repair
01Practise approved checks
Read the exact manual and use only the manufacturer's permitted test procedure. Never trigger a real distress alert as a test.
02Plan backups
Check condition and expiry dates before departure and carry suitable backup navigation and a shared trip plan.
Care & repair · Black Diamond
Black Diamond product care and manual-finding FAQsScope & source notes
General brand support guidance, not exact-SKU instructions. Select only the relevant lighting, pole or protective-equipment section; the page explains where product manuals are supplied. The applicable product manual takes precedence. Do not transfer cleaning procedures between electronics, metal hardware and textiles. This is not a substitute for required training or inspection, or evidence of NZ warranty coverage.
Common buying questions
Good to know
Does a satellite device work without registration or a plan?
Requirements depend on the device and service. Confirm registration and subscription requirements with the relevant provider.
Can my phone replace all safety equipment?
Do not assume reliable coverage, battery or durability. Plan equipment and backups for the route and conditions.
