Raglan Holiday Park Papahua offers tent and vehicle camping with a footbridge connection to town. Solscape provides a different option for van travellers on Wainui Road, with powered and non-powered spaces and shared facilities. Choose the camping arrangement that fits your equipment, then check bookings and local access separately.
Choose a base for the trip you want
Papahua is the option to investigate when your group includes tent campers or you want to walk into the town centre. Its accommodation range includes camping and roofed stays, which is useful when companions have different needs. Confirm separate reservations if part of the group wants a cabin.
Solscape describes its van sites as best suited to self-contained vans. It lists a communal kitchen, bathrooms and showers; bring your own towel. This is a van-site offer, so do not assume it also accommodates a family tent or large caravan without asking.
| Option | What the operator lists | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Papahua camping | Powered and non-powered sites for tents and vehicles | Site size, electricity and proximity to shared facilities |
| Solscape non-powered | A space in the car park | Whether a simple vehicle park-up meets your needs |
| Solscape powered | Allocated space beside the car park with a power connection | Vehicle fit and connection requirements |
Solscape's non-powered van option is a car-park space, not a private grass pitch. Knowing that distinction before booking matters more than treating all listings labelled "camping" as interchangeable.
Book the whole setup, not just a vehicle
Measure your tent including guy lines, or your caravan and awning, and tell reception about the tow vehicle. Explain any additional trailer or second sleeping shelter before paying. Use our choosing a campsite guide to compare the facilities your group actually needs.
Papahua's guest information lists communal kitchens with cooking appliances, but guests need cooking and eating equipment. Pack pots, plates and utensils instead of treating a kitchen as a supplied holiday unit. It also lists showers and a token-operated laundry, useful considerations when deciding what to bring for several nights.
Check your exact dates through the operator and read the payment and cancellation terms. This guide does not compare nightly prices: different party sizes, sites and booking conditions can produce different totals.
Arrival and seasonal checks
Papahua requires campers to report to reception before occupying a site. Its published rules list camping check-in from 11 am and departure by 10 am. They also prohibit vehicle entry between 11 pm and 6.30 am, so an evening trip into town needs a return plan.
Confirm reception hours directly, particularly when arriving in winter or around a public holiday. Ask Solscape for its arrival procedure too; one park's gate arrangements do not describe another's. Save the confirmation and arrival instructions before driving.
For a summer holiday, reserve the required site category before building activities around it. For a wet forecast, allow daylight to pitch and organise somewhere to keep damp clothing separate from sleeping gear. Our rain-camping guide covers preparation, while conditions provides a starting point for weather checks.
Commercial camping is not roadside permission
A commercial campsite booking does not authorise sleeping in nearby public parking areas. Waikato District Council's camping page provides Raglan-specific maps covering places such as Papahua Domain, Manu Bay and Ngarunui Beach. Read the map for the exact location and current signs, rather than assuming a beach car park is an overnight site.
The council confirms an amended bylaw took effect in December 2025. Older camping pins and trip reports therefore need checking. This guide recommends no public parking location for freedom camping; use a suitable booked campground if permission or vehicle eligibility is unclear.
Connect camp with local walks
The town footbridge is a practical reason to choose Papahua, but coastal tracks need their own route plan. DOC's Ngarunui Track starts at Bryant Memorial Reserve, with steps through coastal forest down to the beach. It is not simply a flat continuation of a town stroll; check the access description before deciding whether it suits your group.
For a separate excursion, Waireinga/Bridal Veil Falls has an upper viewing area reached through native bush, followed by steep stairs towards lower viewpoints. Choose how far to descend with the return climb in mind. Check DOC notices and the forecast before leaving camp, and carry walking shoes, water and a waterproof layer.
Before you go
- Confirm the pitch type, party size and full equipment footprint.
- Check arrival hours, gate access and cancellation terms.
- Bring cooking equipment and dry storage for wet clothing.
- Check the council's current maps before considering public-land camping.
- Read DOC access information for each planned walk.
- Keep a confirmed overnight alternative if your first booking cannot be arranged.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I book a tent site in Raglan?
Raglan Holiday Park Papahua lists tent sites as well as vehicle camping. Book the appropriate category and give reception the size of your tent, vehicle and any trailer.
Is Solscape's van camping the same as a grass campsite?
No. The non-powered option is in the car park; the powered option is an allocated space beside it. The operator describes both as best suited to self-contained vans, with shared facilities.
Can I arrive at Papahua at any time?
No. Its rules require a reception check-in and prohibit vehicle entry between 11 pm and 6.30 am. Arrange your arrival with the park and confirm the reception hours for your date.
