Lakes Edge Holiday Park offers powered vehicle sites and unpowered tent sites at Lake Tekapo. Lake Alexandrina is another campground to investigate through the contact listed by Mackenzie District Council. For either option, establish the camping arrangements before arrival rather than assuming that a lakeside parking space is somewhere to spend the night.

Choose between a holiday park and a committee enquiry

Lakes Edge is on Lakeside Drive and has an online booking route, shared facilities and several accommodation types. It is a practical starting point when your group wants a confirmed pitch and a clear facilities list. The September check found a homepage notice about construction from September onwards; that notice's end date was not resolved in the October partial refresh. Ask whether works affect the area you intend to book.

Lake Alexandrina Campground is council-listed for tents and non-self-contained vehicles. The council camping page directs enquiries to the Lake Alexandrina and Lake McGregor Committee. Confirm opening dates, booking or arrival arrangements, facilities and payment before choosing it; the listing is not a live reservation system.

Option Confirmed distinction What still needs checking
Lakes Edge Sealed Front Row Sealed powered vehicle sites; a minimum two-person charge is listed Vehicle length, actual outlook and your booking total
Lakes Edge Premium or Standard Powered shingle sites; Premium is positioned ahead of Standard Vehicle length, awning footprint and electricity connection
Lakes Edge unpowered site Tent sizes vary Your full tent footprint and parking needs
Lake Alexandrina Campground Council lists tents and non-self-contained vehicles Current operation, facilities and how to secure a stay

Do not transfer Lake Alexandrina's listing to every nearby lakeshore or to a place labelled Lake McGregor in a camping app. Get confirmation for the exact location you intend to use.

Tents, campervans and caravans need different sites

Read Lakes Edge's site descriptions before reserving. In the partial refresh on 12 October 2026, the Premium and Standard shingle categories ask guests to contact the park for caravans longer than eight metres or caravans using an awning. The Sealed Front Row description also directs longer caravans to enquire. Tell reception your complete vehicle and awning setup rather than assuming that a generic powered booking settles the question.

Vehicles connecting to powered sites must have a current electrical warrant of fitness under the park's rules. Tent campers should provide tent dimensions, including guy lines, and ask about the surface and vehicle parking. Our campsite selection guide helps compare these practical details.

Most sites are described as approximately eight by eight metres, not guaranteed to be identical. The operator warns that Tekapo's dry ground can be hard and recommends a groundsheet. Give reception your actual tent footprint before booking rather than using a person-count label as a size measurement.

Booking and arrival

The Lakes Edge FAQ lists site check-in from 1 pm and check-out by 10 am. It describes leaving an envelope with arrival information for booked guests who reach the park after reception closes. Save your confirmation and instructions; that process does not mean unbooked arrivals can occupy a site.

The facilities page identifies reception on the left as you come down Lakeside Drive from State Highway 8. Use that arrival point and your booking instructions, not a generic lakefront photograph or the entrance to the separate lodge.

For summer holidays or a fixed road-trip itinerary, arrange the required pitch before committing to activities. Check the current cancellation conditions, including what happens if your travel plans change. At Lake Alexandrina, obtain the committee's instructions separately instead of borrowing Lakes Edge's process.

For Lake Alexandrina, the council currently gives the Lake Alexandrina and Lake McGregor Committee contact as lakesamcg@outlook.com. Ask for the exact campground entrance, operating dates, tent or vehicle eligibility, drinking-water arrangements, toilets, fee basis and payment method. These are questions to resolve, not facilities established by the council listing. Keep a confirmed alternative until you have the instructions you need.

Facilities and seasonal preparation

Lakes Edge's facilities page lists kitchens, showers, toilets, laundry, drinking-water taps and a campervan grey-water dump station. The kitchens have appliances but are not supplied with your pots, plates and cutlery. Bring those items and ask staff where to dispose of each type of vehicle waste.

DOC describes Lake Tekapo as a highland setting with rapidly changing mountain weather and potentially cold wind even on sunny days. Pack warm layers and sleeping equipment for the forecast rather than the season's label. Include sun protection and water for daytime outings.

For winter camping, ask about ground conditions and which site areas suit your equipment. The operator specifically notes rain, snow and ice can affect its dog-friendly area. A powered site does not itself supply suitable bedding or prove your vehicle's heating arrangements; establish those with the equipment provider. Use conditions before setting off.

Township freedom camping is a separate issue

A campground booking is different from freedom camping on the township's public land. The Mackenzie bylaw prohibits freedom camping within the defined Lake Tekapo township area. It also prohibits tent freedom camping on council-controlled land unless prior written council consent applies.

Neither a self-contained vehicle nor access to a public toilet overrides a prohibition. Use council information for the exact place and vehicle type; this article does not nominate an unbooked lakeshore fallback.

Walk from a checked route, not a campsite photograph

Mt John walking access needs a separate weather and track check. DOC's Tekapo Mt John Walkway starts beside Tekapo Springs and climbs through forest onto open tussock slopes. Its lakeshore alternative is a longer outing, not simply a level wander beside camp.

Choose the route for your group's energy and the forecast, carry layers and leave time to return in daylight. For onward overnight planning, read our separate Lake Poaka and White Horse Hill guides; neither is a replacement name for a Tekapo township campsite.

The Mackenzie, Tekapo and Twizel three-day road trip connects these overnight decisions with a wider itinerary. A spare day in the plan is more useful than treating a different lake's campground as a guaranteed late-arrival fallback.

Before you go

  • Confirm the exact campground, site type and setup dimensions.
  • Save arrival instructions and check cancellation conditions.
  • Ask about construction, seasonal ground conditions and any pet arrangements.
  • Pack cooking equipment, warm bedding and weather protection.
  • Recheck council rules and DOC walking information.
  • Keep another authorised overnight plan if conditions change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I camp in a tent at Lake Tekapo?

Yes, book an appropriate campground site. Lakes Edge lists unpowered tent sites, and council lists Lake Alexandrina Campground for tents and non-self-contained vehicles. That does not permit pitching a tent on public lakeshore land.

Which Lakes Edge site should I book for a caravan?

Check the powered categories with reception. The current Premium and Standard shingle descriptions ask caravans longer than eight metres or using an awning to contact the park. The Sealed Front Row description also asks longer caravans to enquire. Provide the full setup dimensions before booking.

Can I assume Lake McGregor has the same arrangements as Lake Alexandrina?

No. This guide confirms only the council-listed Lake Alexandrina option. Ask the committee about the exact campground, vehicle or tent eligibility, facilities and payment arrangements before travelling.
