Sleeping mats buying advice

Before you buy

Choose a camping mat

Insulation and test basis

Check the published R-value and its test basis. Thickness and a soft surface do not establish how well a mat insulates.

Width where you need it

Compare shoulder width, length and shape with your sleep position and tent floor. Wide mats can change how many sleepers fit.

Your transport and repair plan

Check packed dimensions, weight, valve type and compatible repair supplies. A comfortable car-camping mat may be bulky for backpacking.

Use, care & repair

01Check before a trip

Set up and test the sleeping surface at home. If it is inflatable, follow its inflation instructions and inspect the valve; locate the care instructions for the actual construction.

02Protect the surface

Clear sharp objects and follow the manufacturer's setup limits. If a pump, inflation sack or adapter is needed, confirm compatibility with the exact model.

03Store for the construction

Clean and dry as directed. Air mats and self-inflating foam mats can have different long-term storage and valve-position requirements.

    Therm-a-Rest sleeping-pad and sleeping-bag care FAQs

    General guidance · Checked 12 Oct 2026

    Scope & source notes

Manufacturer FAQ library for sleeping-pad cleaning, storage and valves, and sleeping-bag care; not an exact-product manual. Choose the relevant construction and insulation section. Valve instructions do not apply to closed-cell foam pads, and bag instructions are not automatically quilt instructions. The original manual and care label take precedence. Common buying questions

Good to know

Is a thicker mat necessarily warmer?

No. Check a published insulation value and its test basis rather than using thickness as a warmth rating.

Will two wide mats fit my tent?

Compare their actual dimensions with the usable inner floor, including tapered corners and door space. Nominal person ratings are not enough.

Does losing firmness overnight always mean a puncture?

Not always. Temperature changes and valve issues can also affect firmness. Use the manufacturer's troubleshooting procedure before choosing a repair.
