Keep a Waipu Cove camping base for a coast-focused break, with a deliberate choice between Mangawhai's cliff walk and a shorter beach day.

This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.

Day 1: Waipu supplies and a beach-side arrival

Start in Waipu with groceries and the next day's packed lunch, then settle into Camp Waipu Cove before heading onto the beach. Keep this first outing close to your access point so arriving late does not become a rushed walk. Check the forecast together over dinner and decide whether tomorrow is your cliff-walking day. Leave the tent pitched for the whole stay, with dry layers ready for the return from each outing.

Overnight: Waipu Cove

Day 2: Mangawhai as an out-and-back

Drive to Mangawhai Heads and use the Wintle Street start for the Cliffs Walkway. Choose your turnaround before committing to the far descent; the beach return is tidal, not an automatic loop. Take lunch and enough energy to retrace the clifftop route. If exposure or footing feels wrong, shorten the outing instead of seeking another cliff access. Return to your Waipu Cove pitch for a meal without repacking camp.

Overnight: Waipu Cove

Day 3: A slower Bream Bay day

Give the final day to Bream Bay rather than extending north. Consider a daylight visit around Uretiti, respecting campground visitor arrangements, or simply repeat a favourite stretch at Waipu Cove. This is also the spare day for Mangawhai if yesterday's conditions were unsuitable. Keep away from rough surf and treat beach walking as sufficient. Return to the same booked pitch, or shorten the day before departure if you are not staying again.

Overnight: Waipu Cove

Choose one overnight base

Confirm the site category and arrival arrangements with Camp Waipu Cove. Uretiti is an alternative base for the whole stay, not a promised overflow pitch. Its published guide flags conflicting gate information; ask DOC directly before choosing it. No campsite availability, beach swimming clearance or live road status has been checked for your dates.

Keep the return independent of the tide

DOC distinguishes the tidal coastal return from the cliff track and lists a seasonal closure on the separate Cove Road link. Recheck that restriction and the main walk's notices. Strong wind, rain or an uncomfortable scramble is a reason to stay local, not to replace the outing with a longer exposed walk.
