A compact Matakana and Tawharanui escape with one camp, a flexible park walk and no dependency on island ferries or city transfers.

This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.

Day 1: Matakana to a settled sanctuary camp

Begin in Matakana, collect food, and follow your confirmed campground arrival instructions to Tawharanui. Set up before taking a modest walk around Anchor Bay; there is no need to add a peninsula circuit on arrival day. Pack tomorrow's food now so the vehicle can remain at camp. If the wind makes the beach unpleasant, finish the outing early and reassess whether your shelter is suitable for the overnight forecast.

Overnight: Tawharanui Peninsula, near Matakana

Day 2: Choose a park walk, not a distance target

Use the current park map to choose between the Ecology Trail and a longer coastal outing towards Tokatu Point. Agree on a shorter turnaround if the headland is windy or the group is tiring. Carry your lunch rather than interrupting the day for supplies. Finish with time to dry equipment at camp. If leaving today, pack first and return through Matakana without making a final beach stop a fixed obligation.

Confirm council arrangements directly

Council's readable OurAuckland article distinguishes tent and vehicle camping, but the current park and accommodation detail pages failed to load during research. Confirm the correct area, access instructions, current facilities and restrictions directly. The suggested second overnight is optional; reserve only the nights you need, and do not assume an arrival gate remains accessible indefinitely.

A shorter trip still needs a fallback

Choose a short park outing or a Matakana day if exposed walking is unsuitable. If the camp itself cannot be used, arrange confirmed accommodation around Matakana rather than sleeping in a day-use car park. Neither the tourism description nor an older park article establishes today's track, sea or camping conditions.
