Backpacks buying advice

Before you buy

Pack for a New Zealand day hike

Torso and hipbelt fit

Use the brand's measurement guide and the exact size or Extended Fit range. Height alone is not a reliable pack-size selector.

Try your expected load

Test the loaded pack in store where possible. Check hipbelt contact, shoulder movement and access to pockets, not just the empty weight.

Protect what must stay dry

Check whether a raincover is included and how the manufacturer describes water resistance. Do not assume a raincover makes the contents waterproof.

Use, care & repair

01Measure before adjusting

Follow the brand's torso and hipbelt sizing instructions, then adjust the harness with a realistic load.

02Check the complete packing list

Allow room for water, food, layers and emergency equipment. Try opening and closing the pack with everything inside before leaving.

03Clean and inspect

Use the model's cleaning instructions. Inspect seams, straps and buckles, and dry thoroughly before storing.

Common buying questions

Good to know

Should I choose pack size from my height?

Use torso length and the hipbelt fit range first. Two people of the same height can need different harness sizes.

Does more capacity mean a better pack?

Only if you need that space and the load stays within the manufacturer's guidance. Fit, carry system and access can matter more than a few extra litres.

Is a raincover enough to protect my sleeping bag?

Check the cover and pack limitations. Keep essential dry items in appropriate waterproof protection rather than relying on a cover alone.
