Tawharanui camping is an Auckland Council regional-park stay beside an open sanctuary and marine reserve. Book the camping area that matches your tent or vehicle setup. Start with the official park page, then confirm the particular accommodation option before paying.
Choose the right camping area
Council's Tawharanui introduction distinguishes tent camping from an all-modes, vehicle-based campground. That distinction matters if your group has a campervan, caravan or a mixture of tents and vehicles. Do not assume everyone can stay together simply because they have booked somewhere in the same park.
Give council your sleeping arrangement, vehicle dimensions and group size. Ask which area to reserve, whether vehicles can remain beside tents and what conditions apply to your particular setup. These details are more useful than requesting a generic beachfront space.
| Your setup | Starting point in council's description | Confirm before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Tent | Tent campground beside the Anchor Bay area | Tent footprint, vehicle parking and access to facilities |
| Campervan or caravan | All-modes, vehicle-based campground | Correct vehicle category, dimensions and any self-containment conditions |
| Tents and vehicles together | Do not assume one booking covers both areas | Whether the whole group can stay in the same permitted area |
This camping-area distinction was rechecked against Auckland Council's introduction on 12 October 2026. It is not a live booking or facilities check.
Compare the practical fit with other Auckland camping grounds before committing. A park stay works best when the whole party accepts the facilities and sanctuary restrictions, not just the beach location. The Auckland and Tawharanui two-day basecamp plan connects your overnight choice with separate walking and beach decisions.
Bookings, fees and arrival
Use the accommodation links on the council park page or phone council on 09 301 0101. A current nightly tariff could not be verified from the live accommodation page during this check, so no price is quoted here. Request the total for your dates and everyone staying, along with the cancellation terms.
Save the confirmation and ask for campground entry instructions before leaving home. Check seasonal vehicle-gate hours separately from your check-in time: being booked overnight is not a reason to assume every entrance remains open. Plan a daytime arrival so there is time to find your allocated area, unload and resolve any mismatch.
The address is 1181 Takatu Road. DOC's directions approach through Warkworth and Matakana, then follow Takatu Road towards the regional park. Buy food before reaching the park and bring drinking water for your outings. Both DOC's reserve information and the council introduction advise preparing supplies before arrival.
DOC's approach directions continue through the predator-proof fence to Anchor Bay parking. That is a useful park reference, not a substitute for your campground arrival instructions. Save the booking's named camping area and entry details before travelling; do not choose an overnight pitch from a beach-car-park pin.
Facilities and packing decisions
Council lists vault toilets and a treated drinking-water supply. Confirm any temporary outage for your dates, and carry a filled container so setting up camp does not depend on immediately finding a working tap.
| Need | Preparation |
|---|---|
| Meals | Bring food, cookware and a cooking setup accepted by council |
| Sleeping | Check the forecast and pack bedding and waterproof layers accordingly |
| Toilets at night | Keep footwear and a head torch accessible |
| Waste | Bring sealable bags and enough vehicle space to take rubbish home |
| Reduced mobility | Ask about the route between your camping area, toilet and beach |
Council describes beach access by sand ladders, not formed accessible paths. An accessible toilet does not establish that the full route to the water suits a wheelchair or walking aid. Discuss the particular assistance your group needs before booking.
Use the packing list to separate essential overnight equipment from beach extras. Pack the first evening's meal and dry clothes where they are easy to reach, especially if you might be unloading in rain.
Protecting the sanctuary
Pets are prohibited, including dogs kept inside vehicles. Registered assistance-dog arrangements need to be discussed with council when booking. Make pet-care plans before travel rather than expecting a vehicle or car park to provide an exception.
The council brochure asks visitors to inspect camping equipment and vehicles for pests before entering. Check stored tents, food boxes and luggage while packing, then close them securely. Follow the entrance-gate instructions and keep to beach-access tracks to protect the dunes.
Do not light fires on the beach or grass. Ask about your intended cooker when confirming the booking; permission for camping does not authorise every cooking method.
Beach time and walking
Fishing and collecting marine life are prohibited in the marine reserve. Plan meals that do not depend on gathering seafood, and observe rock pools without taking their contents.
DOC advises assessing wind and swell, swimming with someone else and keeping inexperienced snorkellers close to shore with suitable flotation. A favourable surfing rating is not a swimming-safety rating. Use our conditions page as a starting point, then check the reserve advice and local signs before entering the water.
For walking, choose a route from council's park information and check current closures. Do not use an old brochure's walking time as a guarantee for your group or conditions.
Council's introduction also recommends a red-filtered torch for observing kiwi after dark. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. If you encounter a bird, stay quiet, allow it space and do not follow or chase it; make this an observation from the permitted paths, not a reason to enter closed areas.

Common questions
Can I camp at Tawharanui in a campervan?
Council describes an all-modes vehicle campground as well as tent camping. Confirm the booking category, vehicle dimensions and any self-containment conditions with council; a tent booking is not confirmation of vehicle access.
How much does Tawharanui camping cost?
Check Auckland Council's booking service for your dates and party. The live accommodation tariff could not be verified during this check, so no nightly price is quoted here.
Can I bring my dog to Tawharanui?
Pets are prohibited, including dogs inside vehicles. Council asks visitors with a registered assistance dog to arrange an exemption when booking.
