Lake Taharoa has two bookable campgrounds: Pine Beach and Promenade Point. Both accept tents, caravans and motorhomes, but only Pine Beach offers powered camping and showers. Bring your own drinking water; the supplied water is not potable.
Choose between the two campgrounds
These are the Kai Iwi Lakes campgrounds in Taharoa Domain, managed by Kaipara District Council. Confirm the campground name when booking and navigating, rather than treating every lakeside access point as the entrance to your accommodation.
| Campground | Setting and facilities | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Pine Beach | Eastern side; powered and non-powered areas, flush toilets, paid hot showers | Your group needs power or shower access |
| Promenade Point | Western side; non-powered camping and flush toilets, no showers | You can manage without power and showers |
Neither operator listing provides a communal kitchen. Plan meals around your own equipment, not a camp kitchen that you expect to find on arrival. For a longer stay, think through food storage and your supply of clean clothes as well as the first night's setup.
At the time of checking, the operator displayed a Pine Beach bathroom-and-shower upgrade notice. It included an older August weekend reference and an intended completion before Labour Weekend, without clearly establishing the current facility status. Ask which toilets and showers will be available during your stay, particularly if accessible facilities are essential.
Arrival and accessibility depend on the campground
In the partial source refresh on 12 October 2026, Pine Beach's listing still separated the mapped powered area from non-powered spaces. Promenade Point's listing described non-allocated non-powered spaces on the lake's western side. Save the correct campground and your booking type, not simply a map pin for Kai Iwi Lakes.
| If your group needs... | What the checked listing establishes | What to ask before arrival |
|---|---|---|
| An accessible shower | Pine Beach lists accessible showers and toilet cubicles | Which are operating during works and the route from your camping space |
| An accessible toilet without a powered pitch | Promenade Point lists a standard accessible toilet cubicle | Whether its layout and the ground between pitch and toilet suit your needs |
| Adjacent family or group spaces | Non-powered places are not allocated numbered pitches | Whether your proposed group setup can be accommodated |
The upgrade banner remained visible during that refresh. Neither the banner nor an accessible-facility label guarantees that a particular facility is open for your stay. Obtain confirmation for the equipment and assistance your group needs.
Fees and what your booking reserves
The operator lists the following nightly charges in NZ dollars, per person. Recheck the amount shown for your dates before paying.
| Camping option | Adult, 15 and over | Child, 5 to 14 | Under 5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pine Beach non-powered | $20 | $10 | Free |
| Pine Beach powered | $25 | $10 | Free |
| Promenade Point non-powered | $15 | $8 | Free |
Non-powered bookings reserve space for people, not a numbered pitch. Choose a place within the permitted non-powered area when you arrive; booking together does not itself reserve adjacent pieces of ground. Tell the operator about a large tent, multiple vehicles or a group that needs to camp together.
Pine Beach powered sites have a maximum of five people counting those aged five and over. Enter the whole party accurately and check how your group fits the booking conditions. Do not confuse a per-person charge with a flat price for the entire site.
Booking and arrival
The campground rules require a confirmed booking. Payment confirmation is required at least ten days before arrival, or before arrival when booking closer to the date. Council opens bookings from 1 July for that financial year, ending the following 30 June.
Read the cancellation terms before committing: the operator describes accommodation as non-refundable and non-transferable for changes of mind, bad weather or an early departure. Staff-assisted bookings and changes can attract administration fees, so check the complete total rather than budgeting from the nightly rate alone.
Check-in starts at 11am and departure is by 10am. Gates close at 9.30pm and reopen at 7am. Save your confirmation and route before travelling, and contact the campground in advance if your arrival plan may not fit those hours.
Drinking water, cooking and power
The operator restricts the supplied water to cleaning, showers and toilets. Bring enough drinking water for everyone, including water used to prepare food. Keep that supply clearly separate from containers filled with non-potable water so another person does not mistake one for the other.
Gas cooking is the permitted method; fires, braziers and charcoal-style barbecues are not a substitute. Pack your cooker, fuel and cookware using the packing list. Neither campground has laundry facilities, so plan clothing for the length of your stay.
Electric-vehicle charging is prohibited from powered sites, and council lists no dedicated charging station in the domain. Arrange charging as a separate travel task before deciding your arrival time or remaining range.
Looking after the lake
Freedom camping is prohibited throughout Taharoa Domain. If the booked campgrounds are full, use our campsite directory to identify another authorised overnight option, not another lakeside clearing.
For a coastal alternative, compare the separate Uretiti Beach guide. The Northland camping comparison keeps each campground's water, power and pet notes separate rather than carrying Lake Taharoa's rules over to every regional option.
Pets are not permitted; notify the operator ahead of time about a certified assistance dog. Do not wash dishes, clothes or yourself in the lake. Follow the operator's Check, Clean, Dry guidance before bringing watercraft or equipment from another waterway.
Council warns that there is no lifeguard on duty. Plan active supervision around the water and do not treat clear water as proof that swimming is safe. Review the conditions page, local notices and conditions at the shore before deciding whether to swim or paddle.
Before you go
- Confirm the campground, party numbers, payment and cancellation terms.
- Ask about Pine Beach works and the facilities you need.
- Pack drinking water, cooking equipment and clean, dry water gear.
- Plan travel around gate hours and any EV charging stop.
- Keep a booked alternative available if your preferred campground is full.

Common questions
Which Lake Taharoa campground has powered sites?
Pine Beach offers powered sites as well as non-powered camping. Promenade Point is non-powered only. Check the operator's availability for your dates.
Can I drink the water at Kai Iwi Lakes campgrounds?
Bring drinking water. The operator says the supplied water is not from a potable source and is for cleaning, showering and toilets, not drinking.
Can I arrive without a booking or freedom camp nearby in the domain?
The operator does not accept campers without a confirmed booking. Freedom camping is prohibited on Taharoa Domain, so a full campground is not permission to camp elsewhere around the lakes.
Does a Pine Beach booking include a numbered non-powered site?
No. Non-powered bookings reserve capacity for people, and campers choose a permitted space on arrival. Powered bookings use a separate mapped area. Confirm group arrangements and the exact campground before travelling.
