Coastal manuka camping near Palliser Bay, accessed from the Wairarapa side of the Remutaka Range.
Approach from the Wairarapa side
Corner Creek is reached via Western Lake Road, Wharekauhau Road and the Ocean Beach side of Palliser Bay. It is not a drive-through connection from the western side of the Remutaka Range. Check the last unsealed section and both stream fords before committing. DOC warns against low two-wheel-drive vehicles and says high-clearance four-wheel drive is often necessary, especially during or after rain.
Choose a pitch for the conditions
The camping area is among coastal manuka with the bay a short walk away. DOC explicitly notes strong winds, so judge the conditions and available shelter rather than choosing only for proximity to the beach. Keep a workable route for packing down if the weather deteriorates. Broad vehicle-access labels do not mean that every large caravan or motorhome can manage the approach or turning space.
Bring what the shelter does not provide
A cooking shelter is useful cover, not evidence of appliances, utensils or a potable supply. Bring your own meal setup and plan around untreated stream water. Book ahead, keep dogs leashed and do not use fires. Treat fishing, surfing or cycling as separate decisions after checking the day's conditions, leaving the overnight plan flexible enough that staying near camp remains a worthwhile option.
Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
