Grassy estuary-side camping a short walk inland from Awana's surf beach.
Stay beside the estuary, walk to the surf
Awana puts camp on grass beside the estuary, with the beach reached on foot rather than directly from a beachside parking space. That suits a trip where carrying boards or beach gear a short distance is acceptable. Decide what you actually need at the water before packing the vehicle, because DOC does not allow driving onto the beach from camp.
Keep the pitch easy to live in
The surrounding dunes and farmland give this a different feel from a deep-forest campsite. DOC specifically recommends insect repellent, so a well-screened tent and a practical place to prepare food deserve attention alongside the view. There are cold showers and a cooking shelter, but bring your own cooker and utensils. Untreated taps require a drinking-water plan rather than simply filling bottles and leaving.
Organise the island logistics first
Reserve the stay and confirm island transport separately, including the narrow gravel approach if bringing a vehicle. Seasonal camp hosts should not be your only source of information or backup supplies. Make room for rubbish and recycling until an appropriate island disposal point is available. Assess sea conditions independently each day; a beach's popularity with surfers is not a guarantee that it suits every swimmer.
